How can I dispute errors on my credit report?

If you find errors on your credit report, you can dispute them with the credit reporting agency to have them corrected. Here are the steps to dispute errors on your credit report in India:

1. Obtain a copy of your credit report: You can obtain a free credit report once a year from each of the credit bureaus in India (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion CIBIL). Review your credit report carefully to identify any errors.

2. Identify errors: Common errors on credit reports include incorrect personal information, accounts that don't belong to you, accounts that have been closed but are still reported as open, and incorrect credit limits or balances.

3. Contact the credit bureau: If you find an error on your credit report, you should contact the credit bureau that issued the report. Each bureau has a dispute resolution process that you can use to dispute errors on your report. You can usually file a dispute online, by phone, or by mail.

4. Provide supporting documentation: When you file a dispute, you will need to provide supporting documentation to prove that the information on your credit report is incorrect. This might include copies of statements or receipts, or other documentation that supports your claim.

5. Wait for the results: The credit bureau has 30 days to investigate your dispute and respond to you in writing. If the bureau agrees that there is an error, they will correct it on your credit report. If they don't agree, you can add a statement to your credit report explaining your side of the story.

6. Follow up: If the credit bureau has not responded to your dispute within 30 days or if you are not satisfied with the response, you can follow up with them to request additional information or escalate your dispute to a higher authority.
